Blackpool will be deprived of one of their main midfielders this season at Hartlepool following the end of their loan deal.

Cardiff have recalled Ryan Wintle from his one-season loan at Bloomfield Road after a successful spell in which he became a central figure at the heart of the central midfielder.

the Sailors were one of many clubs interested in the former Crewe man this summer on a permanent basis, but the Bluebirds were successful in luring him on a three-year contract.

However, it quickly became apparent that their former manager Mick McCarthy was unable to offer him consistent minutes and Blackpool stepped in to offer him a first-team loan spot.

Already short in central midfielder, this news only sought to highlight the Tangerines’ lack of options in this area, but Neil Critchley believes that is integral to using the loan market.

“You always know taking a player on loan like Ryan who has made a huge contribution to our team is risky,” said Critchley.

“We really enjoyed having him here but we always knew he was the Cardiff player.

“This is something that we have planned and prepared, you don’t want to do that, but you have to imagine and visualize your team without him and what that could look like.

“Ryan has been great and I hope he returns to Cardiff and has a good second half of the season for them, unless he plays against us of course.”

Given the nature of his contract, it’s likely the Seasiders will struggle to bring him back to the Fylde Coast for a permanent deal, so other options are on the agenda.

This is a key position that Neil Critchley seeks to fill and he is well aware of the lack of depth in the center of the park.

“I think if you look at the makeup of our squad and the players we have in this position you would say this is an area of the pitch where we are a bit lacking in numbers,” added Critchley.

“Obviously, now Ryan returning to Cardiff, I would say it’s a position that we would try, if we can, to strengthen during this window.”
